Environmental Issue Instruction

                 Second Grade

•We had an in school field trip with the Maryland Zoo Mobile. It came to provide the program Habitat Happenings. The program investigates a variety of habitats found throughout the world, and describes what animals that live in those habitats need in order to survive. We discussed how pollution would affect our Earth during this presentation and how we could take care of our Earth.

•In the spring we are going on a Science of Soil field trip. Students get their hands dirty as they explore the changing landscape. Students will create soil ribbons to classify soil texture, discover the rocks beneath us, evaluate ways to prevent erosion, and gain a greater appreciation for the importance of soil in the lives of plants and animals.

•We hatch, observe, and release butterflies in the spring.

Third Grade

•In science we studied coniferous vs deciduous trees to see what their behavioral and physical adaptations are to survive in their habitats.

•We study the travel and function of seeds and their parts.  We study what the environment needs to provide for seeds to survive, and the impact of environmental changes on the success of seeds and plants.

•We travel to the Robinson Nature Center to study native plants and experiment to find the elements of their success.
